This is a picture of a cold, windy afternoon in the fall.  It shows the beautiful skyline of Louisville as I sat on the levee in Indiana gazing across the Ohio River. Contained in the picture are the river and tourist boats which ply the Ohio. You can see the twin buildings decked out in red and white with twin spires designed to resemble the twin spires of Churchill Downs. In the foreground are large maple trees dressed in their yellow fall foliage. These trees change from yellow to orange to brilliant red through the fall. The inspiration for this picture came from many visits to what is known as “Thunder over Louisville,” which takes place approximately two weeks before the Kentucky Derby. This is the official opening ceremony for the Derby. I’ve sat on this levee along with as many as 700,000 people to witness an all-day air show followed by an amazing fireworks display after dark.
