This is a picture deep in the freshwater swamps. It was inspired on a cold, drizzly, winter day, in the midst of our coldest time of the year. It’s in an area where the famous Annie Miller takes people on her alligator tours. Over the time when I did the picture, on several occasions her tour would pass with her crew of tourists who’d actually stop and take pictures of me doing the picture, so I was part of their tourist attraction. What I tried to capture in this picture was how cold it was, and how barren the swampland is in the middle of the cold winter, and even though it was barren, and everything was brown, nothing was green, there was still abundant life. Whole families could live from the wood ducks, nutria, and alligators, even in winter. It wasn’t intended when I did the picture, but the “rou-ga-rou” is just noticeable in the picture. The rougarou is the Cajun version, told to the little children, of the “boogie man.”  (Pronounced rū guh rū)

*Original includes mounting with triple matting under clear glass in a neutral frame.
